About Me

I’m Shane Woods — an independent photographer, writer and emerging investigative journalist based in Western Australia.

I spend a lot of time looking at how things are meant to work, how they actually work, and why those two versions rarely match.

My interest is in institutions, systems and official explanations — particularly the ones that sound very confident right up until you read the documents. I follow process, paperwork and evidence, mostly because they’re less prone to mood swings than people and harder to argue with once they’re on the record.

Earlier in my photographic work, I documented emergency and incident environments: car crashes, fires, violent altercations and scenes involving fatalities. It was the sort of work that teaches you quickly that accuracy matters, restraint matters more and that having a camera doesn’t automatically mean you should use it.

These days, my photography has slowed down considerably. I mostly work with landscapes, seascapes and surf culture — places where the subject doesn’t try to manage the narrative or issue a media release afterward. The approach is observational and patient.

My writing is investigative by nature. I look at Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), government process, institutional behaviour, workplace systems and areas where official explanations feel a little too neat around the edges. I rely on primary documents, formal information requests, corroboration and persistence. Speculation is easy. Waiting for records to come back is not.

Everything on this site is produced independently and published free of charge. I don’t accept payment for coverage, access or placement. That’s intentional. Independence is easier when no one’s paying you to look the other way — or to look enthusiastic about it.

I’m a member of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) and the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). I work to established professional standards around accuracy, verification and ethics — even when it slows things down or ruins a perfectly good narrative.

No hype.

No spin.

No dramatic music swelling in the background.

Just the work — and whatever the paperwork happens to say.
